Child and Family Psychological Services

Children aged 0-12 years

Psychologists working with young children at the International Health Centre can offer advice to parents on:
• General behaviour management
• Managing sleep, bedtimes
• Toileting behaviour - daytime/night-time
• Behaviour in social situations
• General development issues

Appointments are available either at the International Health Centre or in your own home, whichever is most convenient for you.

Individual work with children

The Psychologist may work with the child to help alleviate issues such as anxiety, fears and phobias, low self esteem, social relationships, etc.

Group work with children and/or parents

Information and support are available on various aspects of managing difficult behaviours:

• Prevention, which may include parenting skills courses, or talks on specific areas of development (e.g. sleeping, eating, toileting, play, emotional and social development)

• Problem-focused groups for parents experiencing similar difficulties with their child(ren), with a focus on goal setting and implementing positive strategies e.g. sleep problems

• Informative group sessions for children with specific illnesses that require regular medication e.g. asthma, diabetes; with a focus on understanding illness, how medications work and improving motivation to comply with medical regimes.

The Child Psychologists at the Health Center are experienced in working with a range of specific difficulties that may occur in childhood, including:

• Attention difficulties and over-activity (ADD/ADHD)
• Anxiety, fears and phobias
• Obsessions, repetitive behavior
• Social withdrawal
• Low self esteem
• Autism/Aspergers Syndrome
• General learning difficulties/disabilities
• Attachment issues in adoption/fostering
• Reactions to family stress (parents' separation/divorce, bereavement)
• Coping with illness (of child or other family member)
